Edmonton's Iconic TV Station Turns 50




On September 1, ITV, now known as Global Edmonton, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary.?

 

Starting on August 30, and all weekend long, Global Edmonton will have on air celebrations. reporters and anchors sharing their favourite stories, photos from the archives, and over 90 alumni will be in the studio for a special cake cutting.

 

Launched in 1974, this new television station signed on to deliver to Edmonton viewers a new look, a local focus, and programming that had never been seen before.

 

Beloved in the community, here are some interesting facts:

  • ITV signed on the air with the movie Hello Dolly

  • The first in Edmonton to have satellite and microwave capabilities to bring live reports from across the province.

  • The first to broadcast in HD and to give audiences an aerial view with Edmonton’s first and only traffic and news helicopter, Global 1.

  • 1979, the Oilers moved to the NHL and ITV’s coverage of Oiler games began by creating the Oilers on ITV, televising their home games

  • 1981, the legendary SCTV was produced out of ITV with John Candy, Catherine O’Hara, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, and Bob & Doug McKenzie. By January 1982 production of the show moved back to Toronto.

  • 1982, Crime Stoppers began on ITV

  • 2000, the name of the station changed to Global Edmonton

  • The home of legendary broadcaster Mike Sobel, Gord Steinke, Lorraine Mansbridge, Bill Matheson

 

Today Global Edmonton remains Edmonton’s #1 News broadcasting on TV, streaming on all platforms and the only station committed to local news every day of the week.
